Preface
Indole and its derivatives have occupied a unique place in Chemistry of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds, because of their varied biodynamic properties1. Many years ago derivatives of indoles have been known for their dyeing properties, many compounds having a structural resemblance to the ancient dye indigo were known until after beginning of twentieth century. It was found that a large number of naturally occurring compounds like alkaloids possesses the indole nucleus. During this period the recognition of the plant growth hormone, heteroauxin2, essential amino acid tryptophan3 as the derivatives indole have added stimulus to this research.
The significant contribution of many derivatives of indole in the development of medicinal chemistry should be recognized. Serotonin, known for vasoconstrictor principle4, plays a vital role as neurotransmitter and in psychosis. The discovery of psillicon and psilocybin5 are the important psychotomimetics. Indole have led to extensive research on derivatives of indole-3-ethylamine or tryptamine, are reported to be potent central nervous system depressants. The anti-inflammatory6 activity was found to be associated with many derivatives of indole, e.g. indomethacin.
